You've decided it's time to move on and find your next role. You need more fulfillment and challenge than you are currently getting, but you aren't sure exactly what you are looking for. Before you go straight to the job boards, take a breath and work out what what is really going to give you what you're looking for.
When we want to leave the current situation we are in, it is easy for our mindset to shift to one of quick exit and compromise. We base our next decisions on timeframes governed by where we want to leave, rather than making the best decision for our future.
So how do we make the best decision for us? The first thing we need to do is to understand what is most important to us. What do we value, what do we believe and how do we want to spend our time. When we are clear on this, we can focus our attention on jobs that support us. If flexibility is important to you and being creative, then a heavily structured job with a rigid schedule won't be a good fit for you. However, you could use the same skills in a different environment that has more autonomy, flexible hours, and scope for ideas and creativity and enjoy it more.
1) What did you enjoy about your last/ current role?
Think about any aspects that you enjoy. This could be your skill set/ expertise, your team, the company ethos, the office environment, etc.
Why do you like these aspects? Is it the sense of achievement, the collaboration, the busyness/ quietness/ aesthetics of the environment?
2) What aspects of your life make you happiest and why?
Do you love spending time with family, or playing a team sport? Are you happiest when you are participating in a hobby or out socialising with friends?
These aspects can be translated into how you like to spend your time most. Do you like to be connected to others, perfect a skill or talent, or nurture others and lead a group? Think about what this tells you about what suits you.
3) What issues are important to you?
Do you feel strongly about any social or political issues that could influence how you feel about a job/ company? If you feel strongly about protecting the environment, you may feel conflicted about working for a mining company, or if you believe in supporting social issues such as housing, free education, and healthcare, then highly profit-driven organisations may not match your beliefs.
Identify what strong core beliefs you have and find industries or companies that are aligned with what you believe on a macro or micro level. When you feel aligned with the overarching ethos and direction of an organisation you work for, the work will be more fulfilling.
When you can answer these questions and develop a profile of what matters to you beyond your skillset, this becomes the key driver when looking for jobs. You can learn new skills and develop your expertise to become more proficient in a job, but you can't change your beliefs and values to 'fit' with a job.
